Kungoni Art Project - Mua Mission, MALAWI

The Kungoni Art Project preserves the 1984 wall painting (‘I Have Come to Set Fire to the World’) that used to decorate the East end of Mpherere Parish Church, Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Malawi. It was painted over in March 2012.

KAPmalawi.org is being developed as the website of the Kungoni Art Project. KAP was started in 2012 to secure the historical record of Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art, which was established by Claude Boucher Chisale at Mua Mission, Malawi in 1976.

The principal activities of KAP are: to digitalize the written and photographic archive of Kungoni Centre; to preserve it for a future generation; and to make it accessible to visitors and scholars by compiling both original and new material into a searchable Database of all artwork and artists (present and historic) associated with Kungoni Centre. It is intended that KAP Data will lay the foundation of a substantial new publication on Kungoni Centre’s place in the history of art in Africa.

KAP will be of interest to the many people who have come to know Kungoni Centre over the years and to all those who have not visited but are interested in disciplines that include African (specifically Central African) art, African Traditional Religion, Christianity in Africa, the peoples and cultures of Malawi, Inculturation and Missiology.

KAPmalawi.org will evolve as KAP approaches completion in time for Kungoni Centre’s fortieth anniversary and Claude Boucher Chisale’s seventy-sixth birthday in 2016. We invite all those who are interested in this treasure house of Malawi culture and art to return from time to time for subsequent editions. TAKULANDIRANI!
